to be revised way lower in the future. but in the meanwhile it's a gift to president obama. because for the next month he gets to say the unemployment rate has come down all the way under 8% to 7.8%. >> do you think what you just said about this report being weird, is that what has contributed to the conspiracy theorists? you heard jack welch talking, arguing with chris matthews on "hardball" he said twice it defies logic. it defies logic. is that because these two are so far apart? >> it does not defy logic. nobody pays much attention to the details of these reports when it's not an election year or one month before the election. this sort of thing does happen from time to time. economists know this. and they say this is not really that unusual. it is really silly and it's almost outlandish to think that the several dozen staff people who are career people, not political appointees at the bureau of labor statistics somehow polluted or had a conspiracy to cook numbers. my guess is we are going to get one more jobs rot before the november election, november 2nd four days before the election. my g

be getting tougher for gop challenger mitt romney. first to iowa. president obama is 49% to mitt romney's 5%. >>> and from the columbia dispatch--this has surrogates from both parties sangled today over who's better equipped to guide the economy over the next four years. >> the president hay has created 4 million new manufacturing jobs. he says he's going to reduce the debt. doesn't say how' goegsing to do it. let's be fair here, governor romney has laid out a vision and a direction for this country. let's hold the president to the same standard as well. >> first of all, we have a deficit plan, it's got health care savings. romney doesn't have a deficit plan. he's got a plan to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires. he's got a 5 trilli$5 trillion. -- another $2 trillion in defense spending. >> just three days into the first presidential debate, meanwhile mitt romney is off to the trail. we have two reports, we begin with nbc's peter alexander, he's with the romney campaign in boston, with a good morning to you, peter. what are you hearing about all the debate preps today. he o'clock n

lifted the obama camp and could it all wash away with the debate on wednesday or even the next big unemployment number? we've got two more coming out before the the election, the first one this friday? >> there's a few things that are driving. this the first is mitt romney has been net unfavorable the entire year. so as people have learned more about mitt romney it just reinforce the fact that he's not popular. that's what you saw with the complete tailspin that he's in over calling veteran seniors and students victims and people he doesn't care about which obviously that happened a couple of weeks ago. that has really driven parts of these numbers. it's not just that he's unable to stay on a message. the message that he's on is not something that people like. middle class voters don't blame obama for the state of the middle class and for the state of the economy. he's the least likely to get blamed compared to corporations, president bush and congress and so on. and when they look at mitt romney's positions, or the positions he says in public or the positions he says in private li
